PENQUIS - The annual Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District Summer Camp makes learning fun and gives children an opportunity to explore the natural resources and agriculture of the region. Our Natural Resources Summer Camp will be held from June 21st – June 25th, and will be based out of Foxcroft Academy. Campers will participate in aquatic insects and water quality with Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Valerie Derosier and John Cullen; exploring the forests with Maine Forest Service's Kevin Doran, wildlife with Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Scott McLellan; weather and meteorology with WABI-TV 5's meteorologist Todd Simcox; and archaeology with Natural Resource Conservation Service's Archaeologist, Gary Schaffer. Our Agricultural Tours Summer Camp will be held from June 28th - July 2nd. Campers will gather at the Foxcroft Academy Student Center and then will be bussed from there to partake in our farm tour adventures. The children will learn hands on about Fleece preparation and spinning with hobbyist Karen Morris of Boarderline Farm; raising dairy cattle with George Nuite of Gillrock Farm; vegetable and fruit growing with Sid and Rainey Stutzman of the Stutzman Farm; growing Christmas Trees with Joy Lacasce of Finestkind Tree Farm; and equestrian care and skills with Gail McCormack of Infinity Horse Farm. The camp will be offered from 9:00AM to Noon for children ages 7 - 12. Enrollment is limited to 30 children. The Foxcroft Academy is donating space in their Student Center for the camp. Community support for this summer camp is provided with funding from the Dover Kiwanis organization, the Milo Garden Club, and Oakhurst Charitable Giving. Snacks are donated by the Save–a–Lot Food Store. This camp is made possible due to the support from the local community and schools, the guest speakers who volunteer their time and the farm families that host throughout the week. Staff of the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District graciously host and facilitate the camp with some volunteer assistance guiding daily summer camp activities. Children will need to wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and muddy. Pre-registration is required by Friday June 18th. For more information and for pre-registration, please contact the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District by calling (207) 564 – 2321, extension 3, or stop by our office at 42 Engdahl Drive in Dover – Foxcroft. |
